Todd Epsten, the former president of the St. Louis Police Board and chairman of the Major Brands liquor distributorship, died of brain cancer early Saturday at his home in the Central West End. He was 52.
Mr. Epsten resigned from the Police Board two years ago after apparently being caught in the middle of a dispute between Mayor Francis Slay and Gov. Jay Nixon over control of the board. Mr. Epsten, who was appointed to the board in January 2008 by Gov. Matt Blunt, was considered an ally of Mayor Slay.
Mr. Epsten was the third generation of his family to run Major Brands, the largest wholesale distributor of liquor, wine and beer in Missouri. The company was begun in western Missouri, and Mr. Epsten oversaw its expansion into eastern Missouri.
In addition to his service on the Police Board, Mr. Epsten served on the St. Louis Airport Commission and had been chairman of Forest Park Forever and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
He was also a trustee of the Science Center, the Art Museum, Greater St. Louis Community Foundation and the Jewish Federation.of Eastern Missouri.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
