Police tape remains near the scene of a fatal wreck on Caleb that happened Tuesday.
Tuesday was a big day for Jonathan Scruggs. The home schooled 18-year-old was just starting at Cleveland Community College and had his first day of orientation at the new Five Guys restaurant at Cleveland Mall.

Jonathan's father, Earl, held his son's karate medals in his hand Wednesday afternoon, less than 12 hours after finding Jonathan's body on the side of the road, the victim of a hit and run.

"There were no skid marks," N.C. Highway Patrol troopers told Earl. "They made no effort to stop."

For a long time, his parents said, Jonathan — diagnosed as having Asperger's Disease (mild autism) — had no direction in his life. He had to be "nudged" into getting a job, his father said. But over the past few months things were finally turning around.

Not only did he have a job, said his mother Barbara, but he was on his way to becoming a history major in college and had qualified for national karate competitions through tournament wins in both North Carolina and Georgia.

"He's been doing so much better…," said his father glancing at the ground, dark glasses and mustache hiding the emotion in his face. "He had so much potential .… And now he's gone."
Earl said his son left the mall around 8 p.m. to walk home, a walk he had made many times before. When Jonathan, who he described as always punctual, didn't return home, Earl filed a missing person's report with Shelby Police. Earl and his son Justin, 16, then traveled up and down Jonathan's route hoping to find him.

It was nearly 4 a.m. when they found Jonathan's body in a ditch on Caleb Road near Pinecrest Road. As Justin ran to a nearby home to call 911, Earl went to check for a pulse and found Jonathan's arm was cold. Jonathan was just a half-mile from home.

"We found him, but it was too late," his father said.

In addition to his parents and Justin, Jonathan leaves behind a younger sister and two younger brothers.

N.C. Highway Patrol troopers said the only evidence found at the scene was a red side mirror and red paint on Jonathan's leg from the vehicle that struck him. There are no suspects at this time.

"That's pretty much all we have," said Trooper Mike Ward, standing outside the Scruggs' Caleb Road home Wednesday.
