The Lankershim family were farmers whose holdings spread across the state. Lankershim oversaw 60,000 acres of the San Fernando Valley by the time he was 22 and was one of the original sub-dividers.

Commissioned Capt. Troop D. Cavalry. 1st Brigade, N.G.O. August 9, 1895, and Lieutenant Colonel, N.G.C. July 21, 1903.

Son of Isaac Lankershim. In 1881, James married Carolina "Carrie" Adelaide Jones and two children, Jack and Doria.
