Lawrence Homer Stivers, 92

Lawrence Homer Stivers, 92, of Mt. Olive, died at 5:37 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Ben Fiore officiating, and military rites will be performed by Mt. Olive Area Veterans. Becker and Son Funeral Home of Mt. Olive is in charge of arrangements, and Mr. Stivers' body was donated to Washington University School of Medicine.

Born on July 22, 1919, in Waukegan, he was a son of Homer and Josephine Moos Stivers. He was a Nokomis High School graduate of the Class of 1937, and then enrolled in Renken Trade School in St. Louis. After his graduation in 1943, he went to Wright Engine School in Patterson, NJ, and Boeing School of Aeronautics in California.

Mr. Stivers married Marjorie Marie Hieronymus on February 17, 1944, in Grand Island, NE, and she survives in Mt. Olive.

He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was part of the Honor Flight on April 5 that visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

An airplane mechanic for Ozark Airlines in St. Louis, he retired in 1984 after 33 years of employment. Prior to that, he was a mechanic for Eastern Airlines in Miami, FL, the Illinois National Guard and American Airlines in Chicago.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive, Zion Praise Band, Mt. Olive V.F.W. Post #5790, Yurkovich-Beck American Legion Post #594 and Melody Lane Band, playing at local events and nursing homes.

A fishing enthusiast, he enjoyed motorcycles, airplanes, bicycles and guitars. He was also an accomplished builder who built his own home.

Along with his wife, he is survived by one son, Lawrence Jerome (wife Charlotte) Stivers of Grand Junction, CO; two daughters, Cheryl Hinkle of Mt. Olive and Lynette (husband Donald) Haehlke of Huntington Beach, CA; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Evelyn (husband Robert) Smevog of South Hampton, PA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Norma Jean Bertinetti; and one brother, Wendell Stivers.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive.
