Motor Racing Driver. William Archibald "Archie" Scott Brown was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. His mother had contracted German Measles during pregnancy and Archie was born with severely physical disabilities ie a withered arm and legs. He had numerous operations during his childhood to try to give him some sort of normality but this didn't prevent him growing up to become a highly regarded sportscar driver. He raced in only one F1 championship race, the 1956 British Grand Prix in a Connaught B-type. He became famous for the way he drove Lister sports cars, however sadly during a non-championship sportscar race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, he was racing his Lister-Jaguar sportscar and battling with the American driver Masten Gregory. In showery conditions for which Spa is noted, he finally came to grief approaching La Source hairpin, left the track striking the Dick Seaman Memorial. The car caught fire and as a result of the accident, Archie late died in hospital.
