Basketball Player. Whitehead was a 6'10" center who was drafted in the second round (41st overall) of the 1978 NBA draft by the then San Diego Clippers and went on to play 11 seasons for the Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs from 1978 to 1989. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. In the 1981-82 season he averaged 13.8 points a game for the Clippers. In his NBA career, he played in 679 games and scored a total of 4,423 points. Whitehead was a key part of Marquette University's 1977 national championship team and averaged 11.1 points and 7.7 rebounds during his three seasons there. He averaged 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds during the school's national championship season in 1977, and hit a buzzer-beating, game-winning layup against North Carolina-Charlotte in the national semifinal. An autopsy found that Whitehead had died from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage related to chronic alcohol abuse. (bio by: Louis M.)
