Mathew Shaw was an American Soldier during the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865.
He enlisted on August 25th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service at the age of 18, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company F of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 29th, 1863. The 9th Veteran Regiment was merged with several other veteran regiments that were organizing in New York City at the time, and the company was assigned as Company I of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14th, 1863.
He served with the regiment through its campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and into Georgia. He was wounded in action in September of 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia, and was first taken to a field hospital, and later transported to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he died of his wounds on November 16th, 1864.
