"Jo" as she preferred to be called, was the daughter of P. Leroy & Ella (Hillman) Lamb. She was an only child. She stayed in the Dartmouth area all of her life, living out her last 20+ years on the farm she grew up in.
She graduated from Northfield Seminary, and received a bachelor's degree and her master's degree in zoology from Syracuse.
Jo married Gilbert Fernandez on September 12, 1937. A large newspaper article was posted in the Standard-Times, New Bedford, of an extensive description including an incredible list of many of the 300 attendees. A description excerpt of the wedding at the home of Jo's parents:

"...guests in front places saw a picture of double glamor--the bridal pair facing the officiating clergyman, and their reflection in a gilt-framed mirror background, which reflected also the glow of seven-branched candlesticks, the grace of green plans, and the miniature white chrysanthemums, and the other white flowers nearby and on the marble mantel....."

After they married, they moved to Dallas, Texas and both Jo & Gil taught there. Gil returned for his 3rd year at the Texas Country Day school, teaching in English & Spanish and supervisor of sports. Jo taught biology & hygiene at Miss Hockaday's School for Girls also in Dallas.

She received an honorary doctorate of science degree from U Mass Dartmouth. An avid lover of nature and the environment, Jo was a member of the New Bedford Garden Club, Lloyd Center for Environmental Studies, MA & National Audobon societies, Manomet Center for Conservation, Dartmouth Natural Resource Trust and the Westport River Watershed Alliance. She was a former president of the Paskamansett Bird Club; was a participant & served as a regional judge with the New England Horseman's Association; was active with the New Bedford Camera Club and the MA Camera Naturalists; and was associated with the Old Dartmouth Ass. & Waterfront Historic Area League.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Foster Fernandez, 3 sons: Joel, Geoffrey and Terry, 2 granddaughters: Jeannie & Cassady, a grandson Quint Fernandez (who died 2 1/2 years earlier) and 3 g-grandchildren: Jessica, Kallon and Devon.
