Birth: unknown
Death: Jul. 10, 1863

Civil War Union Soldier. Twenty-one year old James N. Emery was a citizen of Greenwood, Maine when he decided to become a volunteer soldier on September 21, 1861. He subsequently shouldered a musket as a Private in Company F, 9th Maine Infantry. Within two years of his enlistment, he was far from home on the isolated Morris Island, South Carolina. On July 10, 1863, George Crockett Strong led Private Emery and many soldiers like him, up the oceanfront of Morris Island in an attack against Battery Wagner. It was during this futile charge when Private Emery made the supreme sacrifice for his country.
