Death: Jul. 22, 1863

Civil War Union Soldier. Twenty year old Thomas F. Blackburn volunteered for military service on November 13, 1861. He subsequently served as a Private in Company I of the 62nd Ohio Infantry. This regiment would later be assigned to the Department of the South, specifically Folly Island, South Carolina. On the 18th of July 1863, Union forces attacked Battery Wagner, a Confederate stronghold on adjacent Morris Island, South Carolina. Private Blackburn was in the charging ranks that day, falling mortally wounded. He was borne from the sandy battlefield and eventually transferred to Hilton Head, South Carolina where he would die four days later.
