Civil War Union Officer. At the age of thirty-eight, Wilhelm Grotowsky enlisted as a Sergeant on August 14, 1861 in New York City, New York. He was mustered into Company C of the 46th New York Infantry – "Fremont Rifles". His promotions include 2nd Lieutenant, August 27, 1861 and 1st Lieutenant, March 1, 1862 respectively. The June 16, 1862 battle of Secessionville on James Island, South Carolina was an attempt by Federal forces to capture the nearby city of Charleston. It proved disastrous to the Federal forces that were involved. It was during this action that Lieutenant Grotowsky, now in Company H, was mortally wounded. He succumbed to his wounds on July 2, 1862 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
