Civil War Union Officer. At the age of twenty, this gentleman enlisted on August 2, 1862 at Schodack, New York and was mustered in as a Sergeant of Company G of the 125th New York Infantry on August 27, 1862. He was part of the Union garrison that was captured on September 15, 1862 at the strategic town of Harper's Ferry during the Antietam campaign. He was paroled the next day. Springsteen received a promotion to 1st Sergeant on March 1, 1863. On October 29, 1863, he received a discharge from the 125th NY to become a Captain of Company K of the 2nd United States Colored Infantry Regiment (USCT). This regiment would be mustered out on January 5, 1866.
