Robert was born in Washington, D.C., raised in Lanham, and spent his childhood summers at St. Leonard's Creek. Upon graduating from DuVal High School, Lanham, in 1966, he went to work for the California Department of Forestry until 1969 when he entered the United States Marine Corps, serving until 1971 in Chu-Lai, Vietnam as an E-5, Mag 13. After serving in the military, Rob worked as a house carpenter and became employed with Hargrove Displays of Prince George's County, Md., as a bench and float carpenter.
Barbara and Rob moved to Calvert County from the Metro area in 1980, where they were married and started Calvert Homestead. He was known as the local Broom maker. They grew unusual flowers, herbs and sponges. They started a tree farm under the auspices of the National Forestry Department.
He was a member of the Calvert County Farm Bureau and local Artisans Association.
Memorial services will be held Feb. 24 at 11:30 a.m. at Christ Church, Broomes Island Road, Port Republic. The Rev. John E. Howenstine will officiate; interment will be private.
