Joseph Robert Ballantyne, son of Robert Cochran Ballantyne and Kathryn Ann Rakus, passed away Thursday afternoon at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA., after a tragic shooting accident, at the age of 17 years, 6 months and 8 days.
Joe was born October 26, 1988, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He had lived with his mom and sister, Alyssa, in San Diego, California and Suffolk, Virginia prior to moving to Oskaloosa in June 2005, to live with his father and stepmother. He attended Oskaloosa Senior High School where he was a Junior and a member of the Peer Helping Program. Joe was baptized in Springfield, MA and was currently a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He enjoyed kick boxing, mixed martial arts, and had several gold metals in karate and sparring competitions. He loved military history and aspired to be a Marine. He also enjoyed playing his guitar and even wrote some of his own music. Joe will be remembered as an extremely generous person with a kind and caring soul; he was sensitive to the needs of the young and old alike; he was a good listener and his big heart and goodness will hopefully overshadow the tragedy of his death.
