For his time in the army during WWII, he landed at Normandy several days after the first wave at Omaha Beach. He was wounded at Vire, France approximately D-Day +30 and returned after recuperation to fight with General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge.
Fred worked in Chicago as a salesman and then a manager at Cold Storage companies, stating that living through the depression, he wanted a job involving food because no matter what, people had to eat. Retired from United States Cold Storage around 1976 found him in Clearwater, Florida (initially to be near his younger brother, Angus).
Fred had 3 grandsons by his daughter, Linda (Key) born before his death. At present, he has 2 great granddaughters, born after his passing. His wife, Margaret, pre-deceased him by 4 years and 1 day on July 21, 1988. They are interned at Sylvan Abbey in Clearwater, FL.
