Dr. Hershberger was chemistry professor

Dr. A. R. Hershberger, 73, retired
Westmar chemistry professor
and well-known operator of an apple or­chard in Le Mars, died Monday afternoon
at Floyd Valley hospital after a short
illness.
Dr. Hershberger had been hospitalized
two weeks. He had resided in Le Mars
since 1927.
Memorial services will be held Thursday
at 1:30 p.m. at the Calvary United
Methodist church with Rev. Thomas R.
Balm officiating. The body will be
cremated. Mauer funeral home is in
charge of arrangements.
Arlan Russell Hershberger was born
Jan. 8, 1899, at Mapleton, Ohio, a son of the
late Calvin and Ida Scherer Hershberger.
He married Marie Heidenreich June 17,
1926, at Woodbine, Ill.
Dr. Hershberger, retired professor of
chemistry at Westmar college, was
elected to the college faculty in 1927 and
had continued his service until his
retirement in 1967.
He was named Professor Emeritus in 1967.
Dr. Hershberger graduated from
Westmar college in 1923 with a bachelor of
arts degree. He then taught at the Coal city
high school, Ill. He taught chemistry,
physics and science.
Following this he was an industrial
chemist for two years in the Grasselli
division of E. I. DuPont. He obtained his
master of science degree from the Ohio
State university in 1925.
Following his service to Westmar
college which began in 1927, he set up a
program of graduate study during the
summers of 1929-1939. His doctoral
research was on the subject "The Use of
Platinum Crucibles in Electro Analysis."
The doctorate in philosophy was conferred
on him in 1939 by Ohio State university.
Dr. Hershberger was a member of the
American Chemical society, South Dakota
Academy of Science, American Assn. for
the Advancement of Science, and was
elected to Sigma Xi, honorary science
fraternity.
He had published articles on chemistry
and had written a textbook on the subject
of photography. During the period of his
service to Westmar college he gave a great
deal of time to assist in student activities,
as a personal advisor, and a member of
several important faculty committees.
Dr. Hershberger was a member of
Calvary Evangelical United Brethren
church where he served as a Sunday
school teacher and member of the board of
trustees. He and his wife and sons, James
and Robert, all graduated from Westmar.
James is doing graduate work at the
University of Texas following several
years of military service. Robert will
return this fall from a year of graduate
study at Heidelberg university as a
recipient of a Fullbright scholarship.
Dr. Hershberger was preceded in death
by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
Survivors are his wife Marie of Le Mars;
two sons, James Calvin of Austin, Tex.,
and Robert Lee of Munich, Germany, and
one grandson.
