Betty L. Fagan, 86, of Cambridge City died quietly at her home in Cambridge City on September 13, 2012 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
She was born in Cambridge City on June 8, 1926 to Clarence Erastus and Mary Merle Hammond Taylor. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1944, attended Richmond Business School and worked at the F & N Lawn Mower Company until she married Gene Fagan on September 21, 1947. They lived and farmed in Rush County for four years then returned to the farm of her parents where she and Gene lived and farmed for 44 years. Retiring from dairy farming in 2005 they moved to Gene's boyhood home where they continued to garden, tend flowers and raise beef cattle.
She was a lifelong farmer, working alongside her husband Gene her whole life. She loved being outdoors especially caring for their dairy calves and raising pigs. She always welcomed family and friends into her home and was ready to add another plate at the table when visitors showed up. She enjoyed flowers of all kinds, finding mushrooms, picking berries and putting up sweet corn. She loved traveling to Michigan, staying in their cabin in Kalkaska and enjoyed drinking a cherry milkshake. A member of the Jacksonburg Christian Church, she played the piano and sang in the church choir for many years. Her faith was extremely important to her and she passed that faith on to her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include children Barb (Stan) Eastman and Jamie (Amy) Fagan both of Cambridge City; a daughter-in-law Teresa Fagan of Connersville; 7 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Gene Fagan in 2011; a daughter, Beth Elaine Fagan, in 1957; a son, David Fagan in 2007; and a brother Bernard (Bud) Taylor.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 17, 2012 at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City with Bruce Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Jacksonburg Cemetery . Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM;
