James McLeish was born in Scotland, but left Scotland around the age of 21 to find a new life in the United States of America. He arrived in Philadelphia and hitchhiked to Kearny Town in Hudson County, New Jersey, where he called for his wife. It is unsure if they were married before he left Scotland or when she arrived in New Jersey. They lived briefly in Brooklyn, New York during 1910-1920 and then moved to Philadelphia where they lived until their death.

They had three girls and three boys.
