"Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls" -Joseph Campbell
Southeast Idaho lost a gentle, challenging, creative spirit last Wednesday when Ivan died in a single car accident in McCammon. The Fonseca Alvarez family lost a precious light and binding force.
Ivan was born in Michoacan, Mexico and grew up in American Falls. He enjoyed exploring and recreating in natural areas; playing family baseball; attending family dances; graffiti tagging; and conversing about science, nature, Native American spirituality and mythology, Eastern thought, and his challenging, creative musings. Ivan said, "Your mind's being like, almost hijacked with billboards and commercials and other people's random conversations…Out [in nature] you just got the sounds of birds, water, and the wind."
Studies at Idaho State University and involvement in the Drug Court program inspired him to paint. He studied at Portland State University and ISU, graduating in 2011. When Ivan painted, he forgot about time and "a lot of stuff." He asked, "[Who needs] fame and fortune[?]"
His art is found in many homes and was shown at Pocatello Art Walks, the Southeast Idaho State Fair, and the Pocatello Community Art Center. Ivan wanted people to easily understand and be challenged by his art. He said, "Even if you're not an artist, there's reason to get out and interact with people… In the technology age, we tend to hole up instead of communicate with people directly."
Ivan is survived by parents Aureliano and Rafaela; siblings Manuel, Lily, Mario, and Lupe; nieces Emilie, Marissa, Jazzy, and Maya; and Guerro. He was grateful for familial support of his art as he grew up, a gift not all have.
