They spent only a short time in Missouri before coming to Kansas and locating on the farm 5 1/2 miles north of Muscotah, Ks. Preston lived on the farm where he was born his entire life. Preston and Mellie Kate Small were married December 27, 1898 in Atchison, Kansas and spent their entire married life on the home farm. Mr. Hartley was connected with the Farmer's Mutual Insurance company about 34 years and his work in that capacity made him one of the best known citizens in this part of the state. He served at one time as trustee of the township, but his greater interests were not of a political nature but in anything to better his community. He helped route the second mail route in Atchison county and his father-in-law, the late Henry Small, who lived to be more than 100 years of age, was a rural mail carrier for many years and made his home with the Hartley's the latter part of his life. Mr Hartley was survived by his wife, one son, Lawton of the home and a daughter, Mrs Ray Raines of Topeka, also three grandchildren. A daughter, Margaret, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Horton Methodist Church. The Rev. Kendell, paster of the church, conducted the service.
