Poet laureate and literary critic. Born into Jewish immigrant family in New York, he attended Columbia University. After the graduation, he worked writing liner notes for albums of classical music before going back to college and obtain a Ph.D. in Literature. He is also known for his role as a judge in many races acting student, and always supported the importance of listening to poetry read aloud. During his life, he has received several awards such as the appointment as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1979), the Bollingen Prize (1983), MacArthur Fellowship (1990) and Robert Fitzgerald Prosody Award (2006). From 1958, He published numerous works of poetry and literary criticism, including "A Crackling of Thorns", "Movie-Going", "The Night Mirror", "Rhyme's Reason: A Guide to English Verse", "Harp Lake", "The Work of Poetry, The Oxford Anthology of English Literature, American Poetry: the Nineteenth Century" and the last "Sonnets From Dante to the Present". Hollander died at the age of 83 because of pulmonary congestion.
