Sherrod Lemuel Holland was born 5/25/1828, as per the family bible of Allen Holland. I do not yet know the exact relationship between Sherrod and Allen, as this date of birth is 6 years prior to the marriage date of Allen and his presumed 1st wife Mary. He did follow Allen closely. In the 1850 census, he and Josiah Taylor (Allen's nephew) are living with the Shadrach P. Sutton family in Arcadia, Louisiana, next door to Allen's family. Shadrach is Allen's cousin. In the 1860 census, he is again living next door to Allen, this time in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

Lemuel enlisted 5/14/1862 at Many, Sabine, Louisiana and served as Captain of Company E, 11th La. Infantry. He resigned his post 11/14/1863 because of atrophy of the muscles of the left arm, caused by a blow to the shoulder.

By the 1870 census, his apparent widow Louisa was living alone with their 3 children next door to her brother Robert Sibley, and she is remarried in the 1880 census to John M. Carr.

Lemuel married 1st 1/16/1853 to Susan A. Sutton, the daughter of Oliver and Elizabeth Sutton (Oliver is another cousin of Allen Holland). Their daughter Savanna P. Holland apparently died between the 1860 and 1870 censuses, or she married young.

As of now, I do not know if Lemuel was a child of Allen and an unknown wife, an illegitimate child of Allen's, or possibly a child of Allen's father Lewis Holland's second marriage. It is also possible that he was an orphan who was adopted by Allen and Mary, as in an article in the 5/18/1933 edition of the Bienville Democrat, historian Virginia Dorman mentions that Elizabeth Taylor was an orphan child raised by Allen, and she, too, is listed in Allen's bible next to Lemuel. One other additional piece of this mystery is that in the succession record of Allen's oldest daughter Sarah Holland Reynolds Madden, she leaves part of her estate to the heirs of Lemuel Holland, her "brother by the whole blood." However, Sarah's other heirs (no surviving children) refuted the fact that Lemuel was her brother, but did not deny the inheritance.

If any descendants of Lemuel should see this, please contact me so we can share information.
