William "Bill" Anderson

Birth date: July 30, 1930
Death date: October 11, 2012

William (Bill) Anderson passed away peacefully on October 11, 2012 at his home at Lake Panorama surrounded by his loving family. He was 82 years old. Bill was born on July 30, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from DePaul Academy in 1948 and attended the University of Illinois.
Bill served in the Illinois National Guard from 1951 - 1953. Bill met the love of his life, Gloria Ellen Smiley and they were married on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1953. Shortly after their wedding, he was called into active duty and was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home to Chicago in 1955 he started his career at United Parcel Service as a driver. In 1966, he was transferred to Des Moines, Iowa to accept the position of Delivery information Manager. He continued to rise in the organization in Iowa, becoming a Division Manager and later Manager of UPS Air for the country. This was a very challenging job that he thoroughly enjoyed. He retired with 32 years of service.
Bill had many interests and hobbies. He was always "fixing" something; always had a project, the quintessential handyman. He loved photography and collected cameras. He enjoyed working in fused glass. He frequented art galleries and was a collector of art. He liked boating and fishing at his homes at Lake Panorama and Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He collected stamps and coins with his grandchildren. Bill was an avid golfer, enjoying golf year round with friends in Florida in the winter and as a member of the Lake Panorama National Golf Course Men's League in the summer.
Bill was an honorable man with a keen sense of humor and a wry wit. Honest and hard working, he inspired those around him to do their best. "All I can do is lead by example," he would often say. He demonstrated this core value to his family, coworkers and friends. Bill was a devoted husband, loving father and doting grandfather.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria; daughter Ellen (James) Russell of Centennial, CO; sons, Mark (Vicki) Anderson of Polk city, IA; Don (Linda) Anderson of Johnston, IA; and Tom (Molly) Anderson of Chanhassen, MN. Eight Grandchildren; Collin Tuttle, Allison Braverman, Adam Braverman, Daniel Anderson, Lauren Anderson, Samuel Anderson, Eliza Anderson and Ella Anderson; two great grandchildren; step-mother, Eileen Thiede of Madison, WI; step-sister, Michel (Patrick) McGettigan of Madison, WI; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinnon Anderson, Alice (Conger) Anderson and sister, Alice Jean Gierke.
