Donald Warren Blair, 91, passed away June 29, 2012. Don was born January 18, 1921, to Ralph and Lillian (Minger) Blair in New Providence, Iowa. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High, the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. In 1943, he married Leah Catherine Conzett. They had two daughters, Barbara and Linda, and raised their family in Des Moines.
Dr. Blair served in the Army during WWII as a physician and continued duty in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Colonel in 1982. In 1951, he began private practice as an orthopaedic surgeon with F. Eberle Thornton, M.D. and retired from private practice in 1980. He then practiced orthopaedics at Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, retiring as Chief of Orthopaedics in 1992.
Don was a 60-year-member and served as an Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, an Easter Seal and Children Convalescent Home consultant and his interest in amputation and rehabilitation led him to consult for the Iowa Department of Rehabilitation for 43 years in addition to his private practice.
Dr. Blair was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and his brother, Leslie. Those left to cherish Don's memory include his daughters, Barbara and Linda Blair (Des Moines), granddaughter Verity (Ryan) Mick and great-grandchildren, Carrick, Caedmon and Ainsley, all of New Brighton, MN.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with fellowship following the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Westminster or the Calvin Community Good Samaritan Fund.
