Death of as Old Colonist..

The death is announced of Mr. Edward Burgess, an old colonist Mr. Burgess, who was 85 years of age, came to the colony in the ship Coromandel, and was for some time engaged by the late Mr. Edward Stephens, and also by the South Australian Company. Upon relinquishing his connection with the company he established a dairy farm at Happy Valley, where he lived for some years before moving to the neighborhood of Clarendon, where he conducted what was known as the Park Farm. Later on he settled in the township of Clarendon and remained there for a year or two before proceeding to Prospect, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. Mr. Burgess had been an active member of the Wesleyan Church for 60 years. .

THE LATE MR. E. BURGESS..

The remains of the late Mr. Edward Burgess who died at Prospect on Wednesday morning, were removed to Clarendon on Thursday, and subsequently to the Kangarilla Cemetery where they were interred. At the grave the Rev. Isaac Rooney conducted an impressive burial service, and Mr. John Broadbent, a very old friend of the deceased, in a few well- chosen words testified feelingly to his worth. Amongst the relatives present were Mr. J.W. Dall, Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Dall, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Dridan, Mr. and Mrs. R. Bartlett, Mr. and Mrs. S. Shiedow, Messrs. E. Hack and C. Foot, Mrs. Edwards, sen., Mr. and Mrs. T. Edwards, Messrs. W. Dall, F. Shiedow, and W. Thistleton, Mr. and Mrs. Harper jun., and Miss Shiedow. The friends included Messrs. T. Shipway, Wright; Barringer, Broadbent, Harper, F. K. Dix, Scriven, Chapman, Paddick, and S. J. Dridan. The late Mr. Burgess is credited with having been the first to so name the localities known as Happy Valley and Cherry Gardens.
