Dorothy Ann Staughton "Dot" Lynd Hoffmann
Birth: Jul. 15, 1905
Hamilton County
Ohio, USA
Death: Apr. 9, 1959
Fulton County
Georgia, USA

Dorothy Ann Staughton Lynd Hoffmann was born July 15, 1905 in Cincinnati, Ohio, a daughter of Elijah Waring Lynd and his wife Katharine Leslie Hickman Lynd. She was affectionately known to her family and friends as "Dot."

She attended Cincinnati schools, then entered Penn Hall Preparatory School in Chambersburg, PA as a Junior, graduating in 1923. Her major concentration of study was Modern Language. In the 1923 Penn Hall yearbook, Dorothy is described as having "amber hair, and a great sense of humor. Of those who are coming back next year many wish that she was to be here with them."

Dorothy married John Frederick Hoffmann of Springfield, Ohio, son of William Frederick "W.F" and Irma Sarah Kreider Hoffmann. She thought it was a good omen that she and her husband were born on the same day of the same year. They became the parents of a daughter, Dorothy Ann Hoffmann, in October, 1928. A few years later, John and Dorothy moved to East Wesley Road in Atlanta, Georgia. John soon became a successful businessman.

Dorothy was a direct descendent of the Rev. Dr. William Staughton and his wife, Maria Martin Hanson Staughton. Dr.Staughton was the first president of what is now George Washington University and a two-term Chaplain of the US Senate. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Dorothy loved animals, especially small dogs, spending time with her daughter and husband, and traveling to Florida for summer vacations and visits with her mother and sister, Katharine.

Dorothy died in Atlanta, GA on April 9, 1959, after a brave battle with breast cancer. Preceding her in death, other than her parents, were her sister, Margaret Waring "Peg" Lynd, who died in 1940, and twin brothers, John Waring and Thomas Lynd, who died on the same day as their birth. She was survived by her husband John, her daughter Dorothy Ann Hoffmann Black and husband Ian of Stone Mountain, GA; her sister Katharine Lynd of West Palm Beach, FL, and three grandchildren: Gordon, Kathleen, and Bruce.
