Balsar Sellers Rumberger was born in Centre County, PA in September of 1831. He enlisted as a private, 6/21/1861, with the 34th Pennsylvania Infantry [5th Pennsylvania Reserves] and his service ended as the result of a disability discharge, 8/15/1861. The 34th was ordered to Cumberland, MD, then to West Virginia, and to Washington, D. C. where Balsar left the regiment.
He married first Elizabeth Hannah Harper and they had three sons; Elizabeth died 9/18/1868. He then married Mary Jane McElroy, 9/29/1872, in Huntingdon County, PA; they had two sons. Balser was in the mercantile business in Huntingdon, PA until he went bankrupt in 1884. He was elected sheriff of Huntingdon County in 1898 and served until 1901. He died in September of 1910 from a railroad crossing accident in Petersburg, PA, and he was buried there. Mary Jane died in 1914 in Mt. Union, PA.
