Following high school he worked for Boeing, Co. in Seattle.

In 1942, Howard entered the United States Air Force, and served as a fighter pilot in the European Theater during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Spokane and attended Gonzaga University. He remained active in the Air National Guard and during the Korean Conflict he was recalled to active duty, stationed in England.

After the war he received his Honorable Discharge and remained in the Air Force Reserves and retired as an Air Force Major.

Following his military service, he moved to Sunnyside, WA to join his father and two brothers in partnership of Valley Ready Mix Concert Co. In 1957, he moved to Kennewick, WA to build and operate a branch office there and in Richland, WA. He returned to Sunnyside in 1967.

Howard sold his partnership in the family business in 1974, but remained active building new plants. Howard and Ginny were married in 1981.

In his retirement Howard built two experimental aircraft and was working on a third. Member of Experimental Aircaft Association and several Veterans organizations.

His first wife LaVerne Henley Drollinger. Children one daughter Diana and two sons Dave and Rick.
