Gabriel "Gabe" Delk was the son of Jordan Delk Sr. and Susannah MNU. Gabriel was brother to Mr. Randall Delk, Mr. Jordan Delk Jr., and Mr. Joseph Delk.

Some researchers believe that Gabriel's mother was Susannah Randall based upon a comment made on a genealogical research message board stating that the first born son's given name was often named using the mother's maiden name. While this may be true, there is not concrete, documented proof that Susannah's maiden name was indeed Randall. This researcher will not jump to any conclusions based upon assumptions, and until concrete proof can be found, it is best to leave her maiden name as unknown.

Gabriel, his parents, and his siblings moved to Campbell County, Tennessee after his brother, Randall Delk, was hung for murder in 1807 at Buncombe County, North Carolina. The portion of Campbell County, Tennessee that the Delks settled in later became Scott County, Tennessee when Scott County was created in 1849 from portions of Anderson, Campbell, Fentress, and Morgan Counties.

Based upon available records, it is also unclear whether Gabriel had any sisters. No marriage records can be found for Gabriel's first marriage or the marriages of his siblings. Adding to the ambiguity and lack of documentation is the fact that the Campbell County, Tennessee census records from 1790-1830 were lost. As a result, Jordan Delk Sr. cannot be found in any of census records for Campbell County, Tennessee prior to his death.

Gabriel first married an unknown woman (some believe this was Malinda Adkins, although no documented, concrete proof can be found for this either) about 1820. Together they had 9 known children as follows: Dedama "Dedamy" "Polly" Delk, Mr. Unknown Delk (most likely died as a teenager), Mr. Gilbert Ancil Delk, Nancy J. Delk, Elizabeth "Bettie" Delk, Mr. Andrew "Andy" Delk, Sarah "Sallie" Delk, Unknown Delk (most likely died as a child), and Emaline "Emily" Delk.

It is believed that Gabriel's first wife died sometime between 1840 and 1853. Also, at least one of the death certificates for Gabriel's children from his first marriage lists his name as Garfield. This could have been incorrect or Gabriel's middle name.

Gabriel next married Mary Alice Trail on November 10, 1853 in Scott County, Tennessee. The death certificate for one of her children lists her maiden name as Hewitt or Hughett which was a popular surname in the area at that time. This could have been incorrect or instead Mary's maiden name prior to a previous marriage. Together Gabriel and Mary had 5 known children as follows: Mr. John Delk, Melvina "Mel" Delk, Mr. James Delk, Caroline Angeline Delk, and Clarisa Delk.

Gabriel later moved from Scott County, Tennessee to Casey County, Kentucky around 1858. He is last seen in the 22 Aug 1860 census for Freedom, Casey, Kentucky before his death. His exact date of death is unknown.

I would like to thank Joyce Tinsley (#47516959) and Fabian Doles for the research and help they have also provided around the Delk family.

This is my 4th great grandfather.
