Rufus Benson was the son of Malinda Herter (Hester) and Moses W. Benson of Shelby, Alabama. His father was the U.S. Postmaster of Shelbyville, but died when he was a toddler. Rufus was a 23 year old student from Hillsboro, Alabama when he joined the Confederate Army at Montevallo. He enlisted in Company C 10th Alabama Infantry June 4,1861. He was captured at Gettysburg July 2,1863 and sent to prison at Fort Delaware. Two days later on July 4, 1863 his brother Simpson H Benson was taken prisoner of war With the 20th Alabama Regiment at Vicksburg. On August 2,1863 Rufus escaped by swimming the bay. He was killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.
