"Professor Eddy E, Foster, 75, of Alfred, who formerly chaired the Agricultural Division of Alfred State College, and builder of Foster Lake, bearing his name, died on Dec. 22, following a long illness.
"Born on a farm near Prattsburg, he attended Prattsburg High School, Franklin Academy, and Genesee Wesleyan Seminary before earning his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University. His professional career centered on agriculture and conservation.
"Foster began teaching at Canton State College in 1929. Later he worked for the Long Island Lighting Company. For a number of years, he was a member of the board of directors of the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, New York City. He came to Alfred in 1941 and established the first courses in forestry and conservation at the two-year college there.
"After his retirement, in 1959, he became prominent as a grower of Christmas trees. His "premium nursery grown" trees, as they were known in the trade, were sold as far away as Ohio, New York City, and Connecticut.
"Throughout his life, he was interested in informal education. He chaired the Allegany County 4-H board, was president of the Allegany County Extension Service, and was a director of the District Forest Practice Board and a member of the State Forest Practice Board. He also chaired the three-county Resource Development Committee. Last year he shared in planning a Public Affairs Forum at Alfred State College.
'He was a member of the Wesley Foundation at Cornell and Alfred. At one time he chaired the board of trustees of the Union University Church, Alfred. He was a member of the Alfred Rod and Gun Club and the Allegany County Bird Club.
"A founding director of the New York State Forest Owners Association, he hosted at his plantations an annual meeting of the New York State Christmas Tree Growers Association. He was twice awarded the John N. Thompson Forestry Award He was a long time member of the Hornell Rotary Club and of the Alfred Village Planning Board.
"He is survived by his wife, Alice Phillips Foster: his daughter, Cynthia (Mrs. John) Clements, Mt. Prospect, Illinois; his son, Dr. Phillips Foster, College Park, Maryland; a brother, Francis Foster of Bath, six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
"A memorial service was held at the Union University Church, Alfred at 2 on Tuesday, Dec. 27. The family received friends at the Union University Church Center following the service.
"The family suggests that those who wish may contribute to the Eddy E. Foster Memorial Fund to advance the cause of ecological education or to the American Cancer Society. Donations to the memorial fund may be sent to President David H. Huntington at Alfred State College."
