Eva "Sue" Black Cavin Dillard, 71, passed away on April 7, 2010, at home surrounded by her family in Corsicana.

Sue was born in Gary, Ind., on June 16, 1938. Sue graduated from the University of Mississippi ("Ole Miss") with a B.B.A. degree in finance and marketing. Sue earned her master's in social work from Tulane University in New Orleans. She was also a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.

To all who were privileged to know her, Sue embodied the power that humanism, integrity, and accountability have in transforming lives.
Sue had a brilliant career, retiring as the director of Standards and Quality Assurance of the Texas Department of MHMR in 2000. As the first director of standards and quality assurance for state programs for people with mental illness and mental disabilities in Texas, Sue mentored and inspired a generation of health and human services professionals, many of whom went on to become the foremost leaders in their fields today. Her professionalism and dedication as a social worker and businesswoman were grounded in her deep understanding of, and fascination with, the human condition. She touched not only the individuals served by the State of Texas by improving the quality of their lives but also the staff who were privileged and honored to work for her. Sue served on the Governor's Task Force for Children in 1974 and on the Governor's Task Force for Personal Care Homes in 1986. She received an Outstanding Women in Texas Government award for leadership from the Governor's Commission for Women.

Sue is survived by her loving husband, John Henry Dillard; sons, Dennis of Denton, Scott of Los Angeles, Calif., and Marc and his wife Paige of Oklahoma City, Okla.; granddaughter, Ava; grandsons. Ben and Chase Raymond; brother-in-law, Charles Dillard, his wife Peggy, and daughter Amanda of Corsicana; goddaughter, Claire Von Gahlen of Columbia, Miss.; and her dog and companion, Sudie.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Bruce and Eva Black, brother Sonny, and her dear Aunt Ava Leary.

Sincere and heartfelt gratitude is extended from Sue's family to her caregivers Linda, Joyce, Betty, and Ruby, and to her hospice providers.
The world is a better place and each of us is a better person for having had Sue in our lives. She will be missed but not forgotten and will live in our hearts always.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at the Austin State Hospital Chapel of All Faith, 4110 Guadalupe, Austin, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the local American Red Cross or a charity of your choice.
