Birth: Apr. 5, 1946

Death: Sep. 23, 2009

California, USA

Wallace MacLeary (Larry) Beard, Jr. died at home in Woodland on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, after a 18-month battle with brain cancer. He was 63 years old. He was born in Glendale, in 1946, and raised in Vacaville. Larry joined the Navy and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. During his last tour he was assigned to a PBR in the Mobile Riverine Force (Brown Water Navy), participating in operation "Game Warden" and the 1968 TET offensive. His patrol boat was attached to Navy SEAL Team No. 1. and was charged with insertion and extraction of the SEAL team on their missions throughout the Mekong Delta.

After returning from Vietnam, Larry married Connie Waldeck in 1968. They had two sons, Nicholas and Christopher. Larry started his business, Wallace M. Beard Pump Company, in 1978. Their son, Nicholas continues to run the family business.

Larry was honest and loyal, and honored his family and friends. His many friends and loyal customers are a testimony to this. He was a member of the Woodland Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

Larry was a man of few words, but he possessed a wicked sense of humor. He loved to travel - but would only go in January, as that was his slow time at work. He would travel only where the sun was shining, so he and Connie vacationed most every January in Mexico or the Caribbean.

Larry had a wonderful life. He was a truly happy person; he loved his family, his friends and his work. The world was a nicer place because Larry was here, and he will be so very missed.

Larry leaves his wife, Connie and son, Nicholas. Larry is also survived by his father, Wallace Beard Sr.; brothers, Wayne (Diane) and Bruce Beard; sisters, Barbara Pawsey (Michael) and Melissa La Londe (Robert); mother in law, Dorothy Dorsey; brothers-in-law, Gary (Barbara), Steve (JoAnn) and John (Monica) Waldeck; and sister in law, Joan Waldeck. He is also survived by nieces, Tracie DeWitt, Amanda and Mallory Waldeck, Kathy Porter and Karen Murvin; and nephews, Clinton DeWitt, Sean and Charlie LaLonde, Steve and Scott Waldeck, and Schuyler Waldeck-Myers.

He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher in 2001; mother, Lu Ellen Beard; and sister, Claudia DeWitt.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, at Nelson's Grove, 15285 CR-99E, just north of Woodland. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Shriner's Childrens Hospital, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, 95817 - Attn. Memorials; or to a charity of the donor's choice in Larry's memory.
