Son of E. Franklin and Emma Jane Fry; born July 24, 1893, Royal Center, Cass County, Indiana. When seventeen years old moved with parents to Lonebutte, Alberta, Canada. Farmer. Following the declaration of war against Germany, he returned to U.S., and enlisted in 2nd Montana Infantry, National Guard, Lewiston, Mont., July 29, 1917. Overseas in December, 1917; assigned to Company F, 163rd Infantry, 41st Division. In France, the 41st Division received a major disappointment. It was designated a replacement division and did not go to combat as a unit. The majority of its infantry personnel went to the 1st, 2nd, 32nd and 42nd Infantry Divisions where they served throughout the war. Walter ended up with the 1st Infantry Division, 16th Infantry Regiment, Company F. Killed in action July 18, 1918, Buzancy, France. Buried where he fell. Officially REPORTED ON AUGUST 26, 1918.
