Maria was born on 6 Nov 1801 in Gross Algermissen, Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany, the daughter of Johannes Conrad and Anna Maria Angela Moeller Kirsch. She was baptized in St Matthaeus Catholic Church in Gross Algermissen on 7 Nov 1801. On 25 Apr 1826 she married Johann Christoph Ahrens in Gross Algermissen.

Nine children were born to the couple in Gross Algermissen: Anna Franziska Gertrud "Mary" Ahrens [Schneider], Franz Christian Andreas Ahrens, Elisabeth Angela Ahrens [Brandes], Josef Ahrens, Heinrich J Ahrens, Georg Bernard Ahrens, Theresia Ahrens [Reineke and Eilers], and Marie Katharine Ahrens [Schneider].

Johann died in March 1869 in Gross Algermissen, and Maria fervently desired to see her children who had immigrated to the States before she died. Her wish was fulfilled when her son Henry paid her passage to America. She died of an accident which occured at Henry's home in O'Fallon on 15 October 1874.
