William Joseph "Billy Joe" Isbell was the first son of William T. Isbell and Martha Paralee Miller Isbell. He was born March 6, 1875 in Alabama (probably Rock Creek, Colbert County) and was listed when the census was taken in Rock Creek, Colbert County, Alabama on June 16, 1880 . His sister Hattie married Levi Austin "Aussie" Malone January 2, 1898 in Hill County, Texas.
Martha P. Isbell, who was then a widow, and her two sons William Joseph (aka "Billy",Billy Joe" and "Joe") Isbell and John Robert Jackson aka "Jack" Isbell were living with Hattie and "Aussie" Malone on the Walter Wallace farm (about 15-17 miles NW of Hillsboro) and on December 26, 1898 while Jack Isbell was gone for the holidays and Joe Isbell was out working the field with a Mark Ellis and "Aussie" had gone to help his father William Malone; Martha Isbell and her daughter Hattie were alone at home with Hattie and Aussie's baby when a fire accidentally started in the kitchen from a woodstove. By the time Joe Isbell got to the house it was too late to get the two women and the infant out of the house and all were lost in the fire.
