Lillie Etta Shuman Saxon
Lillie Etta Shuman was one of the four children of Ernest Wheeler Shuman and Cordelia A. Young "Cordie" Sale. Her siblings were Delver Howard Shuman, Floyd Harold Shuman, and Armelda Jean Shuman. Lillie's paternal grandparents were Albert Shuman and Anna Wheeler Shuman; her maternal grandparents were Dr. Fleetwood H. Sale and Lillie Gibbins Sale. Lillie married Herbert Leslie Saxon in Aurora, Dearborn Co., IN on 2-8-1939. They raised a large family with Lillie happily welcoming the additions of spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Lillie had a "green thumb" and enjoyed raising African violets and ivy plants; she grew Lily-of-the-Valley and Iris in her yard. She also was a talented artist, sharing her numerous paintings with her family; an antique mailbox painted with a red school house on the front, strawberries on one side and daisies on the other, is a favorite of one son and his wife. Lillie sewed wedding gowns for her daughters, using a button or some fabric piece from her own wedding gown in each of the three gowns. She also created dolls; one grandson still has his "train conductor" doll and a granddaughter still has her cheerleader doll as well as two child's size rocking chair "rag" dolls from Grandma Saxon. Crocheting and knitting also were Lillie's talents as she kept her family well supplied with toboggan hats, slippers, placemats, pillows and toys.
"Shuman - Saxon Wedding Solemnized St. Mary's Catholic Church was the scene of a beautiful morning wedding, Wednesday, February 8, when two happy young people were united in marriage in a solemn ritualistic service, performed by Rev. Wm. F. Heuser, who also celebrated the nuptial mass. The bride, Miss Henrietta Schuman [Lillie Etta], daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schuman, residing near Dillsboro, was attired in a white satin wedding gown, fashioned along princess lines over which she wore a white silk lace dress. Her short veil was caught with orange blossoms and her wedding flowers were a Colonial bouquet of bride's roses. She was attended by Mrs. Clementine O'Schwaskey [Osinski], sister of the groom who wore a lovely dress of dawn blue satin, with accessories of pink, and carried a bouquet of sweetheart roses. The groom, Mr. Herbert Saxon, was attended by his brother, Arthur Saxon. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Saxon, and resides near Connersville. The bride, tall and graceful, was graduated from the Dillsboro High School last year and is a very popular young lady, as the many prenuptial events given for her demonstrated. She is a granddaughter of the late Dr. Fleet Sales [Sale], and a great niece of Edgar Sales, Dearborn County clerk. The groom is a member of St. Gabriel's Church at Connersville. He is a prominent farmer of that section and lives a short distance from that city, in Fayette County. A bridal breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents following the ceremony, after which the bridal couple left for a short honeymoon and upon their return will reside on the Saxon farm."
