Pauline Huddleston Hathaway Colvin

Pauline Huddleston Hathaway Colvin died Sunday, July 17, at the age of 104.

Polly, as she was known, was born in Ruston. She was a graduate of Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech and earned her master's degree at LSU.

When she was 19 years old, she started a lifetime of teaching. She taught home economics in Franklin, Vivian, Shreveport, Plaquemine and at the LSU Lab School in Baton Rouge. After Polly married Emerson Colvin, they lived in Carmel, California during World War II. They returned to Louisiana and lived in Alexandria for many years. There Polly taught fourth grade and later was librarian at L. S. Rugg Grammar School. At Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexandria, she taught Sunday School for more than fifty years. While living in Baton Rouge, she helped teach Bible study classes with her contemporaries in assisted living at The Haven at Windermere.

Polly's love of music lasted all her life - from leading Glee Clubs in the 1930s to playing the piano for church services at The Haven after she was 100 years old.

She was active in book clubs, teaching sororities, philanthropic organizations and always in her church.

Survived by her daughter, Martha Lynn Colvin Cullen, and her husband, Ed Cullen; son, Michael Paul Colvin, all of Baton Rouge; granddaughter, Emily Anne Cullen and her husband Mike Frizzell of Austin, Texas; grandson, Michael Edward Cullen and his wife Monica Cullen of Lafayette; two great-grandsons, Cullen Patrick Nash and Emerson Paul Cullen. Preceded in death by her husband, Emerson J. Colvin; parents, Leonard Clinton and Martha Lynn Hathaway; brothers, Glynn Hathaway, Carl Hattaway and Leonard Hathaway; sisters, Donnie Westbrook, Carrie Stewart, Ivy Shackelford, Eva Beatty, Lillie Brantley, Luna Funderburk and Vera Billups.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, at 9:00 AM with service at 10:00 in the Bolton Chapel of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexandria. Arrangements by Hixson Brothers.
