Thomas Gilbert Sharpe, Jr. of Brownsville, Texas, died at home with loved ones at his bedside on April 6, 2009. He was 73. Thomas G. Sharpe, Jr. was born in San Antonio on December 26, 1935 and moved to Brownsville in 1946. He graduated from Brownsville High School and then served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1955 to 1957. Following his service in the Army, he received academic and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. Attorney Sharpe was a dedicated lawyer who defended many prominent individuals in high-profile cases throughout his career. His passing brought condolences from many of his colleagues in the legal profession. A fierce competitor, Sharpe was a tireless advocate on his clients' behalf and never shied away from a challenging case. He was very active in legal associations, serving as Director of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Chancellor of the Law-Science Academy of America, and President of the Cameron County Bar Association. Mr. Sharpe was honored by the Texas State Bar as Outstanding Practitioner of the Year in 1972 at the age of 36. Sharpe was also an avid sportsman and accomplished golfer, winning many amateur golf tournaments in Texas and Colorado. A consummate storyteller, he could easily captivate an audience no matter the size or social demographic. Active in the Brownsville community, Mr. Sharpe had served as Director of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, President of the Brownsville Kiwanis Club, and was a volunteer leader with the local Cub Scouts. Thomas Sharpe was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and Gilbert Sharpe. He is survived by his former wife of 36 years, Shirley Sharpe Carle, and their three sons: John Carlyle Sharpe of Springfield, MO, Thomas Steele Sharpe of Knob Noster, MO, and James Gilbert Sharpe of Broomfield, CO; his brother, John Sharpe of Fort Worth, and sister, Sharon Lemons of Pflugerville, and longtime caregiver and family member, Maria Guadalupe of Brownsville. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Advent, Episcopal, in Brownsville. A private burial will follow the service.
