Geraldine (Jerri) Lisle Read, 92, of Baytown, Texas, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2009, while a resident of St. James House in Baytown. Jerri was born October 9, 1917, in Ragley, Louisiana, to James Clyde Lisle and Edna Florine Newell, and moved to Baytown at the age of 2 weeks. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Jerri attended Robert E. Lee High School, was elected Miss Robert E. Lee, and graduated in 1935 as Salutatorian of her class.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, W.A. Read, her sister Edna Florine Hershberger of Baytown, and her parents.
Jerri is survived by her daughter Judy Linscott and son-in-law, Stephen Linscott, of Baytown, granddaughter, the Rev. Stephanie Linscott, of Houston, step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Mary Read, of Plano, step-daughters and step-sons-in law, Barbara and Joe Watkins, of Baytown, Sandy and Robert Pennington, of Anahuac, and Becky and Wayne Williams, of Mansfield, Louisiana.
Jerri was an avid bridge player, a wedding and portrait photographer, a fashion writer for Sakowitz in Houston, a reporter for the Houston Post, an accomplished pianist and piano teacher, a substitute teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, and a short story writer.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home, 6123 Garth Road, Baytown, Texas. A graveside service will be held at the Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery on Ferry Rd. at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 8, 2009, conducted by the Rev. Stephanie Linscott and the Rev. Nick Novak. Pallbearers will be Lanny Ray Hershberger, Joe Watkins, Ronnie Read, Robert Pennington, Wayne Williams and Mark Richard. Dr. Robert Leroy Hershberger will be an honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Remington Park, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, St. James House, and Hospice Compassus for their loving care.
