Dorthea "Darah" Kraatz Strübing was born in Malchin, Demmin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. According to the 1819 census she was the daughter of Johann Kraatz, a school teacher and Sophia Müller. According to the census she had a sister, Christina. She next appears in the 1867 census living in Priborn, Ritteramt Wredenhagen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany with her daughter and son-in-law. Darah married Ernest Strübing around 1824. He died sometime around 1865. In 1877, her son August sailed back to Germany to escort her to America to live with him and his family. She remained in Defiance County, Ohio with August and Minnie until her death in 1881.
