Ernestine (Eichorst) was born in Lobsens, Germany and married Johan Jahnke of nearby Hermannsdorf, Germany (Prussia) in 1864 in Hermannsdorf. Her parents were Michael Eichorst and Wilhelmine Ernestine Gollon of Posen, Prussia (Germany). She had at least three siblings, sister Emelie Auguste, brother August Frederich, and younger brother Gustav Julius.


They immigrated to Minnesota in 1868, first living in St. Mary Township, and later settling in Sparta Township. They had seven children: Frederich, Henrietta (m. Schulke), Ida (m. Galow), Augusta, Wilhelmina, Henry and William. Census records show daughter Augusta never learned to read, write or speak English.


Census records also show the youngest four children never married and lived with Ernestine until her death in 1923. Son Henry took over the family farm. Son Frederick and daughter Henrietta remained in Sparta township with their families. Daughter Ida moved to Ormo Township (Yellow Medicine County) with her family.
