Enlisted in the 44th New York Volunteery Infantry at Albany, New York as a private to serve a term of 3 years.

The 44th New York was also known as "The Ellsworth
Avengers. It was a rather elite organization as there were specific requirements that must be met to even be considered. One had to be at least 5'9 inches tall, single and of good moral character.

Mustered in as a Sgt. on 23 September 1861, going south to Halls Hill, Virginia. This is where the 44th wintered. He was returned to the ranks on 25 October 1862.

Saw action in the majority of the battles that the 44th, which was part of the Army of the Potomac. Just a few of the battles were Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Seven Day, etc.

Mustered out with the company on 11 October 1864 in Albany, New York.
