She was born Sarah Robinson, the daughter of Capt. Samuel Robinson (1707-67), founder of Bennington, VT and Mercy Leonard (1714-95). She had 3 sisters and 7 brothers, her brother Moses Robinson (1741-1813) was the 2nd Governor of Vermont and 5 of her brothers were part of the "Green Mountain Boys" and fought at the Battle of Bennington (1777). She was first married to Benjamin Fay, Esq. (1750-86) of Bennington, VT and then to Gen. Heman Swift (1733-1814) of Cornwall, CT in 1793, Swift's 3rd wife of four. Sarah was killed on her front porch by lightning during an April thunderstorm.
