Daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Middleton McDonald; wife of George Wade. According to family legend, Mary McDonald Wade bravely helped Gen. Thomas Sumter and his troops evade Maj. Banastre Tarleton. As a result, she and a child of hers were captured and their home burned. Mary and her child were sent to Charleston as prisoners of war where they died of smallpox and were buried in a mass grave. Mary's body was later identified and her remains were interred on the family plantation near McDonald's Ford on the Catawba River.
