Joseph Dave Martin, Sr., better known as J.D., was born on January 12, 1925, to Dave Paul and Maggie Marian Penton Martin in Goose Creek, Texas. He went to be with the Lord January 27, 2009 at his home in Baytown. J. D. was a student at Robert E. Lee High School in 1943 when he was drafted to fight in World War II. He was stationed first in England and later participated with the United States Army in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1945. He served in the signal corp and fought in the Battle of the Bulge near Bastion, Belgium. He returned home to Goose Creek in the fall of 1945.
He was married to the former Ruby Pearl Tillery with whom he had three children: Ruby Lea, Joseph Dave Jr., and Eugene Paul. In 1946, he went to work for Houston Natural Gas, and later in the year started his 40 year career with Humble Oil & Refining Company. He first worked at the Humble docks and later he was a pipefitter, and retired as a supervisor in the mechanical division. J. D. was a long time member of Trinity Tabernacle Assembly of God Church. He loved to read his Bible and always had it at his side. His other great love was hunting and fishing. He spent many weekends hunting with his lifelong friend, Billy Foster, who preceded him in death. His parents, son, Gene, brother, Marion "Jelly" Martin, sister, Gracie Lea Isaacks, granddaughter, Marilyn Maureen Martin Baugh, and great grandson, Cody Tyler Nelson also preceded him in death. J. D. Martin is survived by his wife, Ruby Pearl Martin; daughter, Ruby Lee Martin; son and daughter-in-law, J. D. and Janice Martin; grandchildren, Victoria and David Banks, Kristeane and Raul Benevides, Gregory Martin, Bill Bardin, and Sunny Martin. Great grandchildren are Allison Brooke Martin, Darian Nelson, Mary Isabelle Giangrosso, Joyakay Julianna Giangrosso, Joshua Caleb Baugh, Maura Colene Baugh, and Alyssa House.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m. at Crespo & Jirrels Chapel with Rev. R. C. Tillery and Rev. Ray Tillery, brother-in-law and nephew of Mr. Martin, officiating. Rev. Franklin McCorkle will be Honorary Pastor. Memorial donations may be made to the Baytown Walk for Life.
