Storey was born about 1730 in Sinking Valley, Huntingdon (now Blair)county, PA.

His wife was born about 1720.

John was born about 1738 in Cecil County, Maryland, the son of Lt Robert Storie and Mary Cummings Storie. His parents died when he was young and he was taken in by his mother's cousin, Rebecca Cummings Stoops and her Husband John Stoops in Cecil Maryland.
His nickname became "Story Stoops", but he kept the last name Stoops as an adult.
He married Mary "Betsey" Morrison from Chester,Pennsylvania and they had a son William Stoops. John served in the Cumberland County Militia in the Revolutionary War and was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. John died about 1785.
