He was the son of James Harrison Gardner and Margaret (Bundy) Gardner. He married Pearl Hainline in 1898, and together they raised ten children. William was injured on March 15, 1928, when the belt on saw mill flew off and struck him in the head. He died of those injuries on April 4, 1928.

His children: Ollie F., Margaret, Agnes, Glendine, James L., Gladys, William F., Mildred, Thurman, and Melvin.

Note: His death certificate only shows his age, listed as 44 and year of birth, listed as 1884. According to his 1900 Federal Census he was born in Dec 1877. Later Census records show he and his wife both, listed with later years of birth than what they alleged on earlier census records.
