Poppa always wanted a Golden Retriever, so the day after Thanksgiving while visiting grandma T. in Ogden, poppa suggested we go to the dog pound up the canyon. In the back of the "not yet ready for adoption" room… poppa was just standing in front of a cage and staring. All I could hear was what sounded like a vicious pit bull dog… and YES, he was in the cage next to a VERY skinny beautiful Golden Retriever.

Immediate love. We played ball with him in the "get to know you" room and took him for a walk. Poppa was a bit afraid to adopt him as he was SO SKINNY and thought he might just die on us. The staff assured us he was healthy, but that he wouldn't be ready for adoption until the next day. So we planned another 1 1/2 hour trip back to Ogden very early the next morning so we could be first in line for him.

We brought him home, fed him well and watched him put on weight and watched this sweet dog begin to feel at home with us and his new "brother" Hinkley. Sam and Hinkley would eat MEAT off the same plate and there was never any food aggression on either of their parts… they truly loved one another.

Sam was known to all as the sweetest most gentle dog anyone ever knew. He would take Aria (the granddaughter) for "walks" around the house while she held his tail. He was her horse and Blake's (the grandson) cuddle monster. He tolerated their loves and gently took food from them… he also loved their pacifiers and toys!

The last year of his life, Sam dealt with seizures that broke everyone's heart! Medication helped control them and lessen the episodes… but he still had a few. The night of August 22nd at around 10:30 pm, Sam had a seizure. WE got him cleaned up and settled and loved on him a bit. That kept us awake later than we normally stayed up… which meant we were awake when the knock at the door came at 11:45pm … Bishop Boyer and President Rapier were at our door to give us the news of Connors death in Taiwan. After everyone showed up at our home, we chatted and cried… then they all went home at about 3;30am. We crawled in bed about 4am and continued to talk and cry… when at 4:30 Sam had another seizure… at that point, after cleaning him up and loving on him some more, we knew we couldn't go to sleep at all as people would be arriving at our home early in the morning. As we look back, we realized that Sam had NOT had a seizure since Connor left… and the day he died he had now had TWO!! Dogs know when their "world" is not right… and we believe somehow Sam knew his buddy was gone.

He LOVED marshmallows (the little ones), playing with golf balls and for the last two months of his life he began playing with a big green piggy that made the most goofy noise… but he loved making it HONK! He became ill two days before he passed away and then recovered and felt great the next day. The night before he died he became lethargic again (looked like heart failure to us)… so we called him up on the bed (a nightly routine)… he climbed his ramp our son Brandon built for him nearly a year before when the seizures and arthritis made it difficult for him to jump up on our bed. We loved him and watched him relax and we went to sleep. While we slept, our dear precious Sam went home to his Hinkley and his beloved Connor.

Our hearts were absolutely broken at this point as Connor went into the MTC on March 5th followed by the death of Hinkley on March 6th, Connor's death on August 22nd and now Sam on Nov 25th only 2 days before Thanksgiving.
