POQUOSON - Dr. Richard Forrest Harrington, Ph.D., 73, a native of Norfolk, Va., and Poquoson resident the past 36 years, passed away Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, in the home he built.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician, and was a member of Christ the King Episcopal Church.
Dr. Harrington received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1960 from Virginia Tech, and his M.E. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1976 and 1980 respectively, from Old Dominion University. He began his career at NASA Langley Research Center in June, 1960 as a research engineer. He received many awards during his 28 years there, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for the development of the radars and computers used for the successful landing of the Viking spacecraft on Mars. After his career at NASA, Dr. Harrington was an Associate Professor at ODU for 15 years. He retired as Associate Professor Emeritus of Engineering Technology in 1996.
Dick was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid ocean sailor, who shared his love of sailing with his family and friends through his many voyages to the Caribbean. His undying motivation drove him to run marathons, scuba dive, become a Ham Radio operator, fly airplanes, and build his own home.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Lt. Cmdr. W. Forrest Harrington.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia N. Harrington; three daughters, Susan Beard and husband, Dean, Janey Foster and husband, Jonathan, and Courtney Rollins and husband, Mark; stepmother, Emma Nelson; two sisters, Mary E. Harrington and Kay Fleetwood; and six grandchildren, David Forrest Bruce, Price Foster, Shannon Rollins, Brendan Rollins, Erin Rollins, and Christopher Beard.
Cremated, Ashes scattered.
